About the role

We are looking for a talented, creative and hard-working Communications and Engagement Officer to join us at one of the most important and exciting times for Gloucester City Council. We aspire to create a thriving Greater Gloucester as part of the country-wide plans to reorganise local government. We are looking for professionals who can successfully help us to convince residents, businesses, stakeholders, local politicians and ministers our proposal is the best for everyone living in the city and the rest of the county.

 

The successful candidate will have wide-ranging responsibilities within the communications team, with an emphasis on producing inventive, engaging and compelling video content for all our digital platforms which reflects the terrific work the council is doing for people living and working in the city.

 

You will be based in the cathedral city of Gloucester, which lies on the River Severn, just a stone’s throw from the beautiful countryside of the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. From city centre regeneration and carbon reduction to healthy living and culture, the role of our communications team is to craft and deliver a clear, compelling narrative that helps residents, businesses, and stakeholders understand and engage with the transformation happening around them.

 

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Helping us to deliver our key messages in a clear, engaging, accessible and contemporary way.
  • Producing video and written material for our social media outlets.
  • Involvement in public engagement campaigns – including public meetings and online Q&As.
  • Turning sometimes complex council plans into interesting stories – and helping everyone to understand their impact.
  • Liaising and building a positive relationship with local and national media.
  • Forging communication channels with a wide range of local organisations and community groups to maximise reach and impact.
  • Monitoring public sentiment and engagement, using insights to help us to improve our approach.
  • Liaising with members of staff across the council, cabinet members and other elected members.

 

What we need from you

You need to understand how to shape public perception, inspire action, and ensure communities feel connected and involved with the decisions that shape their city.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • A sound knowledge of communications, marketing, PR or public engagement.
  • Evidence of strong social media and video making skills.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling ability, with knowledge of how to distil complex information into accessible and engaging content.
  • The ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • A passion for community engagement.
  • Evidence of showing resilience and commitment
  • A willingness to operate flexibly to cover some evening and weekend events, when necessary.
