Work experience
We provide opportunities for young people to find out what its like to work in the council.
Work experience is often up to a week spent in a workplace to learn about the world of work and see it in action. It’s mainly for young people but not always. Work experience has a key role to play in preparing people for the workforce and as both an employer and the local council we recognise we have a vital role to play.
Why work experience?
Work experience should be seen as an opportunity in itself. A good work experience placement can help increase your appeal to future employers and help to build your self-confidence.
- It can help you decide if that’s the kind of career you would be interested in.
- Working with other people or teams and carrying out new tasks will help build your confidence.
- It can enhance your CV or applications to show that you have experience in the work place and help prove that you’re enthusiastic and a hard worker
- By working with other people you’re building the skills that employers like to see in their applicants
- You will meet lots of new contacts who may be able to provide you with references or even help your career in the future
- You can get lots of great advice for getting into industry or roles at the council
