Benefits

It’s important to us that our staff feel valued and rewarded, and we also know how important a welcome and enjoyable workspace is. That’s why we offer extra benefits on top of our contemporary offices and fantastic career development, and we are always looking for how we can improve the support we give to our staff.

As a council, we’re progressive and embrace new ideas and innovative ways of working. We also know everyone has a life outside of work and other commitments, which is why work-life balance and flexible working options are the norm. There are other benefits to working here too, like professional development opportunities to nurture the talent we have within the council.

Family friendly benefits and flexible working

Life isn’t just about work, and we know that having the perfect balance means we get the best for the city. That’s why we make sure everyone has the chance to work in a way that’s best for them, with a wide range of flexible working, and family friendly policies and practices.

Some of these options include:

Flexible working

Our flexible working policy means a better work-life balance if you need it, whether that’s working part-time, compressed hours, job-sharing and term-time contracts.

Agile working

Most of our staff are given a laptop to work from, and embrace agile working so you are empowered to choose where, how and when you work. Like most other organisations we are reviewing how we work and looking at offering staff a greater choice in where they are based embracing the desire of many of our employees to work more from home.

Relaxed dress code

Wearing a suit and tie doesn’t equal productivity, so we’re happy for you to dress in a way that you feel is professional, and comfortable.

Annual leave

We offer a generous holiday allowance of:

  • 24 days annual leave for all employees up to Grade F, increasing to 29 after 5 years’ service
  • 29 days annual leave for employees of Grade G and above
  • the option to ‘buy’ up to an extra 10 days holiday (pro-rata for part-time staff)
  • being able to take up to 2 days paid leave every year to volunteer on a range of local projects helping the city of Gloucester

We also offer extra time off for parents including:

  • enhanced maternity and paternity pay
  • enhanced shared parental pay
  • paid compassionate leave as an extension to maternity leave where a baby is born prematurely, as part of the national ‘Smallest Things’ charity campaign

Health and well-being support

Having healthy, happy staff is a priority for us, and there is support available to anyone who needs it, for a number of reasons.

Staff counselling service

We have a dedicated and inclusive Employee Assistance Programme that is available 24-hours a day over the phone and online, with advice, support, guidance and the option to have counselling for needs such as:

  • family issues
  • debt and gambling issues
  • legal and consumer issues
  • relationship advice
  • medical advice

Sport and physical activity

As well as supporting a healthy mind, we can also support a healthy body with:

  • a reduced rate for staff at GL1 Leisure and Fitness; and
  • the ability to purchase bikes through Cyclescheme, saving you 25-39% on bikes and accessories

Other health benefits

There are other health benefits to working at Gloucester City Council too. We pay towards the cost of glasses and eyesight tests for computer uses, as well as free flu jabs to all employees should they want it.

Pension benefits

The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is one of the largest public sector pension schemes in the UK.
It’s related to your salary and is not affected by stock market changes or performance of investments. Your contribution rate will vary depending on your pay, between 5.5% and 12.5%. We pay the cost of providing the pension after taking in to account investment returns – we generally pay in two thirds and you contribute one third.
You’ll also get life cover of three times your salary, along with financial protection for your family.

Other benefits and discounts

We also have other benefits on offer for outside of work too. You will be able to make the most of:

  • discounts on visitor attractions, short breaks, experiences and discounted purchases on a range of gift vouchers
  • reduced rates for public transport season tickets
  • regular staff socials, and health and wellbeing events
  • discounts on buying bikes and cycling equipment through Halfords, Cyclesolutions and 50 cycles
