About the Job
The primary focus of this role is to facilitate access to an education which is appropriate to a child’s needs, especially those who need additional support – ensuring that schools and other professionals work together so children attend school, make progress, and have managed transfers to other settings should this be required to meet their individual needs.
This is what we need you to do...
- Champion children’s rights to appropriate education and coordinate input from a range of professionals to facilitate this
- Empower and support staff within education settings to develop inclusive practice and environments – sharing best practice
- Support education professionals undertaking the lead professional role to build knowledge, capacity and confidence – including taking on the lead professional role where it is appropriate to do so
- Take a lead in the development and implementation of the integrated early help pathway working closely with social care colleagues to monitor outcomes and allocate resources effectively
- Monitor outcomes for children who are more likely to be vulnerable and use the outcomes to target support and intervention in education settings effectively
- Promote early identification of need and support colleagues and settings to develop appropriate holistic assessments and support plans for children with additional needs
- Provide support and guidance to education professionals working with children at risk of non-attendance or exclusion
- Liaise with a range of practitioners to ensure that appropriate services are involved in supporting individual children in a holistic way
- Provide timely information, advice, guidance and support to families and other agencies to help them access the support they need to get the best outcomes for children.
- Promote the welfare of children and young people, and at all times ensure priority is given to safeguarding and that GCC safeguarding policies and procedures are followed.

- A valid driving licence with access to a vehicle within working hours is essential due to the requirements to drive across the county.

Experience
- Experience of working with children, young people, and their families
- Experience of working within an education setting
- Experience of supporting children/young people with additional needs – including assessment, planning and review of support
- Experience of multi-agency working and working across organisational boundaries; including chairing of multi-agency meetings
- Experience of developing innovative and creative solutions
Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
- In-depth knowledge of education legislation, current local developments and strategic priorities
- Awareness and experience of safeguarding and child protection practice and procedures
- Proven ability to understand and coordinate responses to the education, health and care needs of children with additional needs
- Commitment to an inclusive/enabling response to meeting the needs of children with additional needs
- Ability to provide appropriate support and challenge to parents and a range of professionals
- Knowledge of the Equalities Act and skills to provide advice to a range of practitioners in making reasonable adjustments to learning and social environments to safely include children with additional needs
- Good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other practitioners and organisations working with children and families
- Knowledge of countywide services and resources to support children with additional needs
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal at all levels
- Negotiating and influencing skills
- Ability to develop partnerships and multi-agency working, often in challenging situations
- Understanding of project management
Education & Qualifications
Essential
- Educated to A-level or equivalent experience
- Relevant professional qualification, or be able to evidence the knowledge and ability to work at a level equivalent to NVQ level 4
- Evidence of relevant continuous professional development
