About the Role

Gloucestershire Hospital Education Service (GHES) is looking for an outstanding teacher of science, to join their existing teaching team, starting as soon as possible or Easter 2025.

Throughout Gloucestershire, for students who are too unwell to attend their own school, GHES provides short term education, supporting their reintegration to mainstream schools when they are well enough.  We teach English, maths and science to the vast majority of our students, from reception to Year 11.  For science lessons we are able to offer practical sessions and hope to see this increase next academic year.

If you have never considered teaching in Alternative Education this may be the opportunity you are looking for to apply your teaching skills on an individual or small group basis, and being able to make a difference to every child you work with. This is a hugely rewarding role and the successful candidate would find themselves working in a team of highly motivated and creative teachers.  The role can be peripatetic and require travelling across the county to visit children in their homes or to teach in one of our classrooms in Cheltenham. Increasingly, the majority of KS4 lessons are online in small groups, and any candidate would be expected to embrace the use of technology and online learning for this teaching role.

During the year our student numbers rise and fall, so the successful candidate needs to be flexible with working patterns within a school day, and the ability to deal well with students flowing in and out of groups.  We serve the county of Gloucestershire, and students can be located anywhere within that.  Therefore, it is essential that candidates hold a full driving licence and have use of a car.

About you

We are looking for a teacher who:

  • Takes pride in their work and thrive in a busy, constantly changing environment
  • Are able to plan engaging and motivating lessons that support young people who are ill, have very low self-esteem and can re-kindle a love of learning
  • Is flexible and adaptable in the moment
  • Who demonstrate an ability to provide a learning environment to support the needs of all learners, especially our neuro-diverse students
  • Have excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with students, parents / carers, staff at GHES, and professionals in education.
  • A firm belief that a medical condition should not stop a child fulfilling their full potential is essential.
  • Has experience of teaching GCSE Chemistry, Biology and Physics to GCSE Grade 9.
